Whitchurch Cricket Club End of Season Report & Plea From the Chairman
Whitchurch County Cricket Season 2020
WCC have just come to the end of this extraordinary short season. Due to the Covid restrictions we were unable to play recreationally until the end of July. The Hampshire Cricket League, of which we are founder members decided to cancel all competitive games for 2020 and suggested that when restrictions were partially lifted, only friendlies should be played.
What actually happened was that local clubs put their heads together and decided to play for a Vector Cup. There were two divisions and WCC joined the 2nd division.
Results were as follows: Played 8, Lost 1 and 3 games postponed, with Whitchurch Cricket Club finishing top of the division.
WCC also played four Sunday fixtures:
Lincoln’s Inn 40 overs match WCC won by 60 runs
NHS Doctors (Thurs ) 20/20 format. WCC won by 30 runs
John Dennett Cup. 45 overs. WCC won by 5 Wkts
Overton. Overton victory.
One of the highlights of the season was the forming of the U9 Wolverines team. They played in the Winchester Warriors League – Played 5, Won 1 and lost 4.
The ECB All Stars (5-8yrs) and the Dynamos (9-11) had initially been arranged for May, but had to be postponed until the end of August, beginning of September. Both groups met on Friday nights and enjoyed numerous cricket activities.
These activities have meant that in the last two seasons over 100 children have played and enjoyed cricket at Parsonage Meadow.
Basingstoke & Deane Local Plan
One dark cloud on the horizon however is the publishing of the B&DBC Local Plan.
Sadly Parsonage Meadow and its surrounding fields have been put forward as suitable for future development. This would be a great shame for the community, as football and cricket have been played at the meadow for over 170 years.
We at the club have always considered the club and the cricket ground to be a community facility, based obviously on cricket, but serving the whole community. It would be a great shame if such a facility is taken from us.
The Public Consultation is currently underway. If you would like to make you opinion known to B&BDC by the 8th November the link is:
