Gill Nethercott Centre Re-opening Update & What’s On The Whitchurch Association are delighted to announce that the Gill Nethercott Centre will be re-opening it’s doors in accordance with Government guidelines on Monday 12th April 2021

Step 2 – Commencing 19th April 2021 will see the return of Ballet with Marina School of Dance and Hush Little Babies with Beth Lowe.

We are hoping to see a new class called ‘Jiggly Wrigglers’ on Wednesday mornings from 9.30- 10.30am; details to be confirmed – watch this space!

We will also be welcoming back the weekly Friday Market (no catering) beginning on the 16th April 09.30 – 11.30. ——————– Step 3 – Commencing 17th May 2021 will see the return of our adult exercise classes including Pilates with Anna Train, Yoga with Penny Davis, ‘Nia’ with Georgina, Pilates with Cara and Steady and Strong.

We will also be welcoming a new class for the elderly on a Monday afternoon called ‘Lets Move’-  A FREE seated exercise class for the elderly.

If you would like to volunteer to help us run this session either making teas and coffee, driving or helping with leading the singing we would like to hear from you too. All are welcome! ———————– Local elections will still be taking place on 6th May 2021.

The Youth Club and the WI will be returning in September 2021.

Lockdown Quizathon – One Year On!

Amazingly, this Thursday marks the one year anniversary of the Live Community Events site!

As a little celebration, Mark Bish and Amanda Winch will be hosting a quizathon this Friday at 8pm – including some of their favourite rounds and themes from the quizzes over the last year. There  will be 9 rounds, with more information posted on the Facebook site nearer Friday.

The Community Live Events team are also hoping to raise a small amount by way of donations, to help with the expenses of running the live events (printing etc. for treasure hunts and trails.) We appreciate that everyone has been incredibly generous, so really it is token donations required as costs are pretty low. News from Denning’s – Renovations & Big Re-opening on 20th May.

Denning’s Bistro in the heart of the Whitchurch Conservation Area is a beautiful listed building with a long history stretching back 400 years. During lockdown, Aaron the owner has been busy completing renovations and he has kindly provided us with an update and news of a much awaited re-opening on the 20th May. “Initially, we will be opening Thursday – Saturday 9am-11pm, and Sunday lunchtime and cocktails will be available from 12pm every day”.  “Dear Customer We hope you’ve been keeping well through this latest lockdown. I wanted to share a short update on how things are progressing at Denning’s, and what our plans are for reopening over the next couple of months. You may have seen on Social Media, we are thrilled to announce that the kitchen is once again able to open! Since closing in November, we have focussed our efforts on relocating the WC to a new location, with all new fixtures, allowing us to expand the kitchen. This is now complete, giving us almost 3 times the kitchen space, which not only makes it a bit more comfortable for us, but will help us do more, with greater consistency. Throughout March and April, we will be offering Sunday lunches for collection, alongside finishing the redecorating upstairs, and getting ready for a big reopening in May! I think for all of us, that will be a huge relief to make it to that point, and we all look forward to celebrating that with you. Stay safe, and we all look forward to seeing you soon! The Great Whitchurch Treasure Hunt Launches 12pm 3rd April.

The Great Whitchurch Treasure Hunt – Easter Weekend April 2021

The Community Live Events Team will be handing out free Hunt Sheets by the Town Square between midday and 2pm on Saturday 3rd April.

This weekend brings the Great Whitchurch Treasure Hunt and you have until 7pm Easter Monday to find clues, decipher and hunt for the treasure.  

We will be on hand to help out over the weekend and there will be Easter Egg prizes on offer, with a prize draw for those that manage to find and picture the Treasure. 

Fun for all the family –  more info will follow later this week! 

Clipboards are advised as you work your way around town finding clues. Paynes Printers are selling clipboards for a bargain £2.99 on an order and collect basis.

Bere Mill Garden Open Day in Support of the National Garden Scheme – Tickets now on Sale

Once again we are busy, especially in the gardens. To celebrate the arrival of Spring (and Mother’s day), Bere Mill will be opening its gardens on Sunday 14th March in association with the National Garden Scheme (NGS).

Set on the River Test, the working mill was where Portals first made paper for the Bank of England in 1716. Surrounded by water meadows and wooded valleys, the garden has plenty to offer including herbaceous borders, bog and Mediterranean plants, a replanted orchard and two small arboretums.

Tickets are limited so don’t miss out! Due to the current situation, this will be a ticket only event and a time slot will be given to avoid queues and overcrowding. Please visit the NGC website  and search for us in the section ‘find a garden’ for more details. Tickets are priced at £7.50 for adults, with all proceeds going to worthwhile charities. (Free child entry).

To coincide with the opening of the gardens on March 14th, we will also have a special Sunday opening of the butchery.

There are also plenty of other opportunities to see the gardens this year as the seasons progress. Other NGS open days are planned for….. Sunday 2nd May Monday 31st May Sunday 12th September

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests. Forests and Education – Learn to Love Forests When we drink a glass of water, write in a notebook, take medicine for a fever or build a house, we do not always make the connection with forests. And yet, these and many other aspects of our lives are linked to forests in one way or another.

Forests cover one third of the Earth’s land mass. Around 1.6 billion people – including more than 2,000 indigenous cultures – depend on forests for their livelihoods, medicines, fuel, food and shelter. In developed countries, up to 25% of all medicinal drugs are plant-based. Forests are the most biologically-diverse ecosystems on land, home to more than 80% of the terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects.

Yet despite all of these priceless ecological, economic, social and health benefits, global deforestation continues at an alarming rate.

 

 

 

The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. This year the International Day of Forests theme is Learn to Love Forests and seeks to underscore the importance of education at all levels in achieving sustainable biodiversity conservation.
