Join celebrated author Amy-Jane Beer, as she unpacks the wonder, healing, and transformation that we can find through Britain’s rivers.

About this event Join us for an evening with Amy-Jane Beer – author of the Wainwright Prize-winning book The Flow: Rivers, Water and Wildness. A story of rediscovering love in the face of loss, the book details Amy-Jane’s exploration of rivers after losing her close friend in a kayaking accident. In this talk, Amy-Jane will explore the wildness of rivers and how we can reconnect with the natural world.

Amy-Jane is a biologist turned naturalist, nature writer, and campaigner who is based in North Yorkshire. She is the author of The Flow (which won the 2023 Wainwright Prize for nature writing), a Country Diarist for The Guardian, and a columnist for British Wildlife.

This event is part of the Tales from the Riverbank Literature Festival – a celebration of how rivers inspire creativity. This festival is a collaboration between the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme and Hampshire Library Service.

Time: Doors will open at 6.30pm for a prompt 7pm start. The event duration includes the talk and questions from the audience.

Age range: Suitable for ages 12+. All under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Accessibility: The venue has wheelchair access and an accessible toilet.

Parking: The closest car parks are Bell Street and Church Street. Please consider coming by public transport, or on foot, where possible.

Join author and storyteller Amanda Kane-Smith for a FREE guided walk and poetry workshop focused on the Upper Test chalk stream.

About the event

Are you aged 7-11 and fascinated by nature? Would you like to try creative writing? Join us for a chalk stream walk followed by a poetry workshop!

We’ll start by taking a walk along the Upper Test, using our senses to explore this special habitat. Then, we’ll head indoors to turn what we’ve learned into a poem.

You can also enter your finished poem into our poetry competition . You could win £75 of National Book Tokens, and have your poem published in a special booklet.

The walk and workshop will be led by Amanda Kane-Smith of Merry-Go-Round Storytelling. Amanda is a professional storyteller and author with a passion for the natural world.

What to bring: Appropriate clothes for our walk (wellies and a coat if rainy, suncream and a hat if sunny) and a snack for break time.

Accessibility: This event involves around 1.75 miles of walking. Part of the route may be on wet or uneven ground. The venue has an accessible toilet.

Parking: The venue has a car park, and additional parking can be found in Bell Street and Church Street.. Please consider coming by public transport, or on foot, where possible.
