Baxter & Harbron plus Gentile & Wood Perform Live at the Parish Hall

Two wonderful young duos in one evening.
Helen Gentile & Lewis Wood (Threepenny Bit and Granny’s Attic respectively), perform an evocative set of tunes from the balfolk canon on clarinet and fiddle. Their material comprises traditional, contemporary and original European folk dance music, with loose, ever-evolving arrangements creating space for improvisation and showcasing the interplay between the instruments.
In 2024, Gentile and Wood released their first studio album, Violet Sky, produced by Tarren’s Alex Garden. Described by Songlines as ‘folk dance at its finest’, it was also nominated for “Album of the Year” by Bright Young Folk. Listen to Violet Sky at Bandcamp.
Sam Baxter & Merle Harbron are an Anglo/Scottish duo creating dynamic, full-bodied arrangements of contemporary and traditional music. Using fiddle, drones and voice, the pair build vibrant musical landscapes, weaving together melodic lines inspired and improvised from traditional songs and dance music.
The duo’s debut and self-titled recording, is the perfect showcase of what they do best – traditional tunes and songs performed with gumption, nuance, warmth, and ferocity.
