Water Meadows: The Myth and Magic of the Drowner

Whitchurch watermeadows are sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) and sites of interest in nature conservation (SINCs), but what do you know about their origins? If you are interested in finding out more about Hampshire’s watermeadows, then check out this free online event brought to you by the Watercress & Winterbourne’s team.
The origins of water meadows are lost in medieval times, yet their remnants can still be seen throughout the Hampshire valleys. Surface water irrigation expanded in Wessex and throughout England from the 16th century, and remained a sustainable agricultural system for more than 300 years.
In this talk, Dr Kathy Stearne will uncover the origins of water meadows in England, their management and importance to agriculture through the centuries, and why they are still important to our landscape, history, and ecology today.
