Snakestones and Sea Monsters a Talk About the Remarkable Fossil Hunter Mary Anning

Join Silk Mill Trustee and Director of Sedgewick Museum of Earth Sciences, Dr Liz Hide, as she dives into the remarkable life of Mary Anning!
Lyme Regis in the first half of the C19th was a hotbed of fossil discovery. Startling new finds of huge marine reptiles were unlike any living creatures known at the time. At the heart of excitement and debate was Mary Anning, a working class, self-taught fossil hunter who sold her finds to museums, universities and academic gentlemen across the country.
Dr Liz Hide, Director of the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge will talk about how Mary Anning’s important contribution to science was marginalised and hidden by the learned gentlemen of the day, and why her story continues to be hugely inspiring for the next generation of scientists.
Talk followed by time for questions and the chance for some fossil handling!
