Finn and Rob Ronan of Whitchurch, out campaigning to keep an ice rink within the Borough.

A campaign is underway to save ice skating in the area – Keep Ice in Basingstoke.

Local ice hockey skaters Rob Ronan and his son Finn were out today in Whitchurch lobbying for support to save one of the areas most popular attractions – the Ice Rink at the Basingstoke Leisure Park.

From Hockey and Ice Dancing to Musicals
The ice rink is home to many ice hockey teams at all levels, figure and synchronised skating clubs and development programmes as well as providing public sessions and entertainment programmes. It is also home to the successful Basingstoke Bison of which Rob and Finn are active members. It is the only ice rink in the Borough with nearest venues being several hours travel away.

A petition calls on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to support the ice rink that provides entertainment and recreation to many hundreds of thousands of people each year. The rink has serious problems with permafrost and requires substantial work, with one stand being condemned as unusable. However Basingstoke Council have also been discussing a £300 million redevelopment of the site.

Basingstoke Bison provide exciting sport and entertainment for many.

The petitioners say:

At time when central and local government are spending money on schemes to raise awareness and tackle childhood and adult obesity why would you allow the closure of a facility that provides physical activity and involvement to for more people than any other facility in the borough?
We need to make sure that Basingstoke and Deane honour their obligations to the people of Basingstoke and help ensure the current ice rink is kept operational and that plans for a new ice rink are part of the redevelopment plans.

So far nearly 6000 supporters have signed the petition – here: SAVE ICE IN BASINGSTOKE

Call to local election candidates
As well as calling for support with the Petition Rob added:

“With the Borough elections imminent it would be good to hear if we have the support of the local Whitchurch candidates”
