DESCRIPTION:Tucked away in the foothills of the Hampshire downs\, the Summerdown Estate is a hidden gem enveloped by beautiful rolling countryside. It’s also the home of the world renowned Summerdown collection of English peppermint chocolates\, teas and treats. \nWith the beautiful fragrance of our Black Mitcham peppermint\, lavender and camomile\, Summerdown is the perfect playground for wildlife and our precious pollinators are essential to our success. Join us for a buzzing experience as we partner with local bee keepers and honey producers Ken and Vickie who have over 200 hives in and around the North Hampshire area\, with over a dozen here on the farm. \nWalk with us as we immerse ourselves in the beautiful countryside and identify the forage that is paramount to the health and wellbeing of our honeybees. We will learn which plants provide an abundance of nectar and how the different forage can affect the taste of the honey. You’ll learn what is required to raise a successful and healthy hive of bees\, how they go about their day collecting nectar and pollen and how these incredible bees transform their forage into the most delicious all natural honey. Get to see the bees at work flying wild as we explore the apiary site (from a safe distance!). You will also see the bees up close in an observation hive\, – a mesmerising experience\, watching these busy bees go about their everyday chores. \nWe’ll head out onto the farm tracks\, fields and along the hedgerows and finish our tour with an opportunity to taste some Summerdown treats\, made with our prized Black Mitcham peppermint as well as an opportunity for honey tasting so as you can compare how the forages affect the flavour of the honey. \nAlthough the weather wouldn’t deter us if it is a bit ‘British’\, it might affect the experience with the bees\, so we’ll have a wet weather alternative.\nSuitable footwear for uneven ground and muddy tracks is essential. \nWe recommend this tour for relatively active people as this tour will cover a considerable amount of walking. \nAfter booking your tour we will email you within 7 days giving full details of the event. DESCRIPTION:Railway 200 Celebrations – Jane Austen Themed Train Walk and Talk Tour in Overton on Friday 25th April 10.00 am \nAs part of our town’s Walkers are Welcome 10 year celebrations and to also mark the Railway 200 national celebrations\, WaW are organising a train walk to Overton where the Jane Austen Trails Team have kindly offered to lead us on a guided walk and talk tour exploring their new leafleted ‘Overton in Jane Austen’s Time’ walk. The trail has been produced as part of Hampshire’s yearlong celebrations of 250 years of Jane Austen and the walk will cover 2 miles or so on a route around Overton\, visiting relevant locations and giving walkers the chance to hear about the local history connected with Jane. \nThe walk will be followed by a break – so you can choose to enjoy a light lunch\, or refreshments\, before an optional Walkers are Welcome guided walk back from Overton to Whitchurch along the Harroway. Anyone not wanting to walk back can catch the bus whenever they wish. \nWe plan to take the 10.14 train from Whitchurch to Overton as a group\, arriving at Overton station at 10.20\, then walking into the centre of Overton to the meeting point for the themed Walk and Talk Tour\, which will start at 10.45. A standard single rail ticket from Whitchurch to Overton costs £4.40 which you should purchase individually. \nThere is a limit on numbers so if you wish to reserve a place\, please email with your name and telephone contact details to waw@whitchurchassociation.org.uk . \nPlease note that\, in the event of highly inclement weather\, it will be necessary for the Walk and Talk Tour to be cancelled and rearranged for another date.
