SUMMARY:‘A Tale of Two Stations’ - Whitchurch History Society Railway 200 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘A Tale of Two Stations’  – Monday 7th July – Friday 18th July (excluding weekends). \nMany of our residents will recall the time when our small North Hampshire market town was well served by public transport\, boasting two railway lines and rather more buses than we have today. \nAs part of our community’s contribution to the national Railway 200 celebrations\, Whitchurch History Society would like to share some of those memories and have delved into their photo archive to produce this exhibition\, with an introduction written by former Chairman John Mariner who had a lifelong passion for rail travel. \nThe exhibition celebrates the story of both of our stations; Whitchurch Station on the busy West of England line and Whitchurch Town Station on the former\, much-lamented Didcot-Newbury-Southampton line… remembering a time when you could still travel by rail direct to Newbury and Winchester. \nThis is also another chance to see the lovely steam train artwork produced by the children at the Montessori Nursery who have been learning about the history of the DNSR line. \nSally Mariner has kindly donated magazines and railway books to the exhibition that were collected by her husband John over the past 50 years. For anyone interested in railways and steam engines these are an excellent read and any donations received will go to support Whitchurch in Bloom’s continuing work at Whitchurch Railway Station. \nLocation: Gill Nethercott Centre Foyer \nExhibition opening times: \nMonday – Thursday 9am – 2pm (Thursday 17th July 12.30 – 2pm) \nFriday – 9am – 1.30pm.

SUMMARY:Whitchurch Station ‘Birthday’ Event - Railway 200
DESCRIPTION:What is Railway 200?\nRailway 200 is a year-long nationwide campaign celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. The first public railway service\, the Stockton & Darlington Railway opened on September 27\, 1825\, connecting places\, people\, communities and ideas and ultimately transforming the world. \nCommunities and groups across the country are getting involved throughout the year in a wide variety of activities and events to celebrate their own railways\, past and present. \nWhitchurch Railway Station Birthday event 3rd July 10.30 – 11.30\nWhitchurch railway station was officially opened on the 3rd July 1845 and this 3rd July\, several of the town’s groups and the Montessori Nursery will come together with Whitchurch Mayor and senior representatives of South Western Railways to mark this event at the station; we invite residents to come along and join in and please feel free to dress up for the occasion. \nParticipating Groups\nWhitchurch Walkers are Welcome – event organisers\, logistics and publicity. \nWhitchurch Association – Two representatives of the Association will be dressed in full Victorian costume. \nWhitchurch History Society will have exhibition stands with an introduction to rail travel written by John Mariner and accompanied by History Society archives images of Whitchurch Station. Following this event\, the display will transfer to the Gill Nethercott Centre where an expanded exhibition to include the Didcot-Newbury-Southampton line\, will be on display in the lobby for two weeks… opening times to follow. \nWhitchurch in Bloom are baking a very special birthday cake to mark the occasion and have commissioned fabulous Railway 200 plaques for their planters\, designed by a Whitchurch resident. \nMontessori Nursery – The children have been busy producing an art/craft display featuring a steam train; each carriage will accommodate passengers from a different period of the Didcot-Newbury-Southampton railway. This will be on display at the event and will then transfer to the waiting room on the up platform\, so that Friday morning commuters get the opportunity to admire the work. The display will then transfer to the GNC to be included in the wider Railway exhibition. The children attending have also been making station master hats and have ‘special permission’ to blow their whistles as the Salisbury bound train leaves the station. \n  \nThis event builds on the efforts of Whitchurch groups to improve the overall appearance and signage at the station and the recent joint working with South Western Railways to promote Whitchurch tourism; Whitchurch Conservation Group new trail interpretation panels\, Whitchurch Walkers are Welcome working with the rail company to develop the Whitchurch ‘Top Destination’ entry and Whitchurch in Bloom who have ‘Adopted’ the station and are working so hard to make it an attractive gateway point to the town. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Summerdown Honey Bees Walk & Talk
DESCRIPTION:Tucked away in the foothills of the Hampshire downs\, the Summerdown Estate is a hidden gem enveloped by beautiful rolling countryside. It’s also the home of the world renowned Summerdown collection of English peppermint chocolates\, teas and treats. \nWith the beautiful fragrance of our Black Mitcham peppermint\, lavender and camomile\, Summerdown is the perfect playground for wildlife and our precious pollinators are essential to our success. Join us for a buzzing experience as we partner with local bee keepers and honey producers Ken and Vickie who have over 200 hives in and around the North Hampshire area\, with over a dozen here on the farm. \nWalk with us as we immerse ourselves in the beautiful countryside and identify the forage that is paramount to the health and wellbeing of our honeybees. We will learn which plants provide an abundance of nectar and how the different forage can affect the taste of the honey. You’ll learn what is required to raise a successful and healthy hive of bees\, how they go about their day collecting nectar and pollen and how these incredible bees transform their forage into the most delicious all natural honey. Get to see the bees at work flying wild as we explore the apiary site (from a safe distance!). You will also see the bees up close in an observation hive\, – a mesmerising experience\, watching these busy bees go about their everyday chores. \nWe’ll head out onto the farm tracks\, fields and along the hedgerows and finish our tour with an opportunity to taste some Summerdown treats\, made with our prized Black Mitcham peppermint as well as an opportunity for honey tasting so as you can compare how the forages affect the flavour of the honey. \nAlthough the weather wouldn’t deter us if it is a bit ‘British’\, it might affect the experience with the bees\, so we’ll have a wet weather alternative.\nSuitable footwear for uneven ground and muddy tracks is essential. \nWe recommend this tour for relatively active people as this tour will cover a considerable amount of walking. \nAfter booking your tour we will email you within 7 days giving full details of the event. A full refund is available up to 14 days prior to the tour date. If cancelling within 14 days prior to the tour date\, an exchange to a different tour of the same value can be offered. \nIf you have any further questions\, feel free to email welcome@summerdown.com \nTo reserve your place on the tour please follow this link
