Construction work on the area’s railway bridges is now underway. The work is necessary to provide greater clearance for the higher freight trains which will be using the route through Whitchurch. Whilst the main route is from Southampton Docks up through Reading to the Midlands, the route through Whitchurch will be an alternative to allow for engineering works and essential maintenance.

Pedestrian/cycle bridge
Work is presently underway by Network rail on the bridge over the railway at Priory Lane, Freefolk Priors near to Hardy’s Nursery. A pedestrian/cyclist bridge has been installed while the road is closed. It is expected the works should be completed by December 23rd. The alternative route for motor vehicles is via Watch Lane.

Work on the Whitchurch Newbury Road Bridge has been delayed due to wildlife considerations caused by habitation of dormice, and is now planned for January to May 2012.

Replacement coach service at weekends
Meanwhile weekend railway travel is disrupted and replacement coaches are in operation between Salisbury and Basingstoke. As an interesting result, on Sundays the coaches run hourly while the normal train timetable is a two-hourly service.
South West Trains presently list this as for the next three weekends, October 8/9, 15/16 and 23/24, but it is best to check before travelling: South West Trains
