The improvement work on the Great Town Bridge in Winchester Street has now commenced. The historic bridge, which crosses the Test by the Silk Mill and is popular location for feeding the ducks, has had scaffolding platforms erected on both sides over the river.
The railings are being stripped down to bare metal and are being painted in a durable coating while some repairs will also be made to the bridge. The work is being carried out by Hampshire County Council.
The western side is being worked on first and the pavement has had to be closed while the works are in progress.
The bridge is an important feature on entering the town from the south. It is hoped that the road surface which has suffered much break-up will also be repaired soon.
