The process to fill the Town Council’s single vacancy has commenced…
With only 11 candidates standing for the 12 Whitchurch Town Council seats no election was required on May 5th.
A 12th candidate was nominated but their papers were unfortunately claimed as not being received by the Electoral Services department of Basingstoke Council who were overseeing the election.
The Town Council is thus left with one vacancy to fill and a process has now been initiated to rectify that.
A notice has been placed on the Town Council Notice Board stating that if ten electors wish an election be held then they need to contact the Returning Officer in writing at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
“A bye-election to fill the vacancy will be held if, within 14 days (not counting a Saturday or Sunday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, or a Bank Holiday) from the date below*, ten electors for the ward/parish give notice in writing, claiming such an election to the Returning Officer”.
* The ‘date below’ is stated as 6th May 2011, so the closing date can be calculated from that.
It goes on to say that if no such notice is given, then the vacancy will be filled by co-option.
