Announced on Friday evening at the Gill Nethercott Centre, were the young people who will be holding perhaps the most prestigious of the Whitchurch Festival accolades – the roles of the Carnival Queen, Princess and Attendants.
Ten young ladies, all pupils from Whitchurch schools, gave the judges a difficult choice at the selection evening held in conjunction with the weekly Chill2This Youth Club, and marking the start of the 2012 Festival events. Both the judging panel and the festival committee “hope that those not fortunate enough to be chosen this year will join in again next year as all were worthy entrants.”
Those selected by the judges were:
Carnival Queen: Natasha Saunders (12)
Attendants: Katherine Woodman (12), Beth Wiltshire (11)
Carnival Princess: Summer Coughtrey (9)
Attendant: Madison Coughtrey (8)
The official crowning will take place at the May Day celebrations on Saturday 5th May after which these young people will be carrying out their duties throughout the year. The highlight will undoubtedly be on Saturday 7th July when they lead the Procession through the town to the Carnival Fete which this year will include the QEII Field Celebrations, one of the many Jubilee events being held over the summer.
But before all of this, hard work will be going into the making of their wonderful dresses, ably carried out by Cindy Dunlop and Pauline Williams. These made to measure garments are a wonder to behold.
