Whitchurch hotel The White Hart have set up a laptop in their foyer, where the public can vote for the Whitchurch exchange upgrade whilst enjoying a cuppa or pint. The broadband campaign is to bring superfast broadband to the Whitchurch area, under a BT contest where 5 UK towns not planned for an upgrade can win it instead.

Publican Julie Moss said: “As a local business it would improve the speed and quality of the free WiFi we already offer to our customers. It would speed up our hotel booking system, which is already 25% internet based, which in turn will bring more trade from tourism, and in turn more jobs. As a community we have nothing to lose, yet everything to gain for a brighter tomorrow!”

Broadband campaign organiser Mike Stead said “The response in the first week of the community campaign has been amazing. We’ve jumped from 211th to 25th inside 7 days, and we haven’t even started sending out leaflets or putting up posters. We won’t be happy until we get into the top 5, but we’ll need a lot of support and votes from every single house and business to get there. This is critical for the town and area’s future, and winning will have major positive impacts on schools, businesses and individuals”. The campaign homepage is at www.whitchurch.org.uk.
