Recently Whitchurch WI presented the Whitchurch ‘Singing for the Mind’ group with a cheque for £125. The money was raised during Whitchurch WI’s tenure at Rotations charity shop earlier in the year.
Since July 2013 people from Whitchurch and the surrounding villages and hamlets who are living with dementia have been meeting at the Gill Nethercott Centre to share companionship and music every Monday morning. They enjoy coffee and biscuits and then sing for an hour, led by an experienced singing leader. They sing familiar favourites and new songs, exercise minds with simple actions and play percussion instruments. Anyone wishing to join the group, run by the Whitchurch Association, can contact them on 01256 896270. The group can also provide transport to the meetings if needed.
Whitchurch WI’s support of this group follows the National Federation of Womens Institute’s support of the Dementia Friendly Communities campaign. Whitchurch WI is a friendly, mixed-age group of ladies who come together at the GNC on the third Thursday of every month (and sometimes at other times) to socialise with old friends and make new friends, take part in activities and learn about a variety of topics.
