On a warm but dull September afternoon what more could you wish for than to watch a lively local football match.
Whitchurch United welcomed Sholing to the Longmeadow ground for what was always going to be a hard match for the Jam Boys.
The pitch was in good condition, despite the recent long spell of dry weather. The first few minutes of play was fast and furious giving chances for both sides. At 11 minutes Sholing scored their first goal due to poor defending by Whitchurch This was followed just 10 minutes later with second for the visiting side, much to the enjoyment of their loud enthusiastic supporters.
The second half saw much more even play with opportunities being missed at both ends. Following a foul by Sholing, a penalty taken by Luke Walker and a fumble by Sholing’s goal keeper saw Whitchurch scoring at around the 70 minute mark. Sadly though, time had caught up with Whitchurch and they were unable to capitalise despite playing well.
The final score was a fair result.
Whitchurch Utd 1 – Sholing 2
With Newport also winning it leaves Sholing still in second place, while Whitchurch Utd remain mid-table in 10th.
The next game for Whitchurch is on Tuesday evening (24th September) when they are at home against Cowes Sports in the League Cup.
Kick off at Longmeadow is 7.45pm
