League match reports – week 6 (week 6! Where did the time go!)
A change is as good as a rest
The Kings Missfits climbed up to 4th in the league after a close match with the Old House at Home. In recent seasons the Kings team has struggled but a change of name (previously Kings Arms Batty Boys and Kings Arms B) and a few additions to their team has improved their results immensely. Wins for Mitch Wells (season stats won 3- lost 3) and Josh Harper (6-0) gave the Kings a 2-0 lead. The remaining 4 singles games were shared to make the score 4-2 with Old House winners Sam Cross(1-1) and Alex Taylor (1-0) and Kings winners Mick Gotham (2-0) and Neville Bright (3-2). In the Pairs Joe Ashton/Mick Gotham (Kings) opened with a win to claim the match winning bonus points but wins for Daryl Taylor/Sam Cross and Ian Williams/Alex Taylor gave the Old House a more respectable score line.
Final Score – Kings Missfits 5 Old House at Home 4
A winning return to a familiar venue
The WSSC returned to The Prince Regent a venue the team played at for many years up to 2009 before moving to the sports and social club. 4 of the team from the 08/09 season still remain today and contributed to another good victory over the Prince Reunion to move to joint top. Wins for Rob Minall (season stats 4-1), Alan Phippen (4-1), Malcolm Sopp (3-1) and Darren Boxall (3-2) gave WSSC a 4-2 lead after the singles. Prince Reunion Winners were Mark Tressler (1-1) and Bret Carter (2-0). Pairs wins for Alan Phippen/Bob Banning and Malcolm Sopp/Richard Sopp (still an unbeaten pairing) secured the win for WSSC. A consolation win for the Prince in the last game went to Simon Grove/Luke Stickland.
Final Score Prince Reunion 3 WSSC 6
Not a lot of balls
A white wash for the Shots in The Hart over the Kings Ladies was not as one sided as it seemed with many games being close and the quote on the card from ladies captain (and pool league competition secretary/treasurer) Ali Freeborough of “Again not many balls we had left on table” makes it look like alcohol may have been consumed during the evening. Singles winners for the Hart were Richard Belcher (season stats 4 wins 1 loss), Andy Witts (2-3), Adam Wheatley (3-1), Greg Witts (1-3),Lee Baird (2-1) and Paul Eastman (5-0). Jonny Dent replaced Lee Baird for the pairs where the Shots won all 3 games to complete the match and move them into 3rd place.
Final Score Shots in The Hart 9 Kings Ladies 0
Potters on tour…………well Andover anyway
Southampton Arms took a 2-0 lead over Hairy Potter and the Half Cut Prince (I will call them Potters from now on). Chris Newman (season stats 5-0) won the opener and then paired up with John Heredge (pairs match played early due to work commitments) to take the second where Chris did a fine clear up of the last 7 balls. (Note that Kevin Birks (Potters) didn’t even get a visit to the table). The remaining 5 singles went back and forth with the Potters taking 3 of them Kevin Birks (5-1), Dirk Marsh (4-1), John Wright (3-3) and the Arms 2 Ian Gibbons (2-1), John Heredge (1-0). So with 2 pairs to play it was 4-3 to the Arms. A win for Owen Young/Phil Cockroft gave the Arms victory and then Shane Coughtrey/John Wright won the last game for the Potters. This leaves the Arms still at the top but now on level points with WSSC.
