Whitchurch Town Council decided last night to send a member to Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council to speak against the proposals to increase the housing allocations in Whitchurch from 350 to 550 houses.
At a meeting of the Development Committee, Borough Councillor Keith Watts explained the background saying that if approved it would then become Borough Council policy, adding “I consider this outrageous”.
Call for support from Town Council
He called on the Town Council to express their views and to be represented, saying “This Thursday is a very key meeting”.
Town Councillor Allan Vaughan called for the Council to support Keith Watts’, to agree a brief and to engage with the Whitchurch community in order to express their views.
These aims were agreed by the Councillors present and the Town Council will be objecting to the increases at Thursday’s Borough Council Meeting.
Local residents have their say
Councillors also heard from members of the public who have also registered to speak to the Borough Council.
Residents have created a petition that states:
We the undersigned ask (at the meeting to be held at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council on 28th February 2013) that the Cabinet Committee vote against the Revision Decision Notice to Item 13 on the Local Plan Housing Allocations and reinstate the following as the Original Papers (Officers recommendations).
- The allocation of 350 homes in Whitchurch over 15 years in the proposed Local Plan AND not increase it to 550.
- The location of dwellings in the later phase of the plan to be decided through ‘Local Determination’, ie Neighbourhood Planning AND not take away our right to a say in the future of our community.
The Petition can be downloaded from here: HOUSING PETITION
It can also be signed at the Gill Nethercott Centre and the Town Hall.
Downloaded copies with signatures can be dropped into the Town Hall Letterbox.
The residents’ petition supporting notice states:
ACT NOW TO SAVE WHITCHURCH
At a Cabinet meeting to be held at 6.30pm this Thursday (28th Feb) at Basingstoke and Deane Council, the Member for Planning will be recommending that the allocation for new houses in Whitchurch over 15 years in the Local Plan be increased from 350 TO 550.
Also, instead of allowing the location of houses in the later phases of the plan to be decided locally through Neighbourhood Planning, the same person will name the green fields behind the Knowlings (Site 1) and those from Winchester Road to Micheldever Road (Site 2) as having 200 HOMES TO BE BUILT ON EACH SITE.
These changes go against the recommendations of the Officers in the Planning Department at Basingstoke & Deane who prepared the original Local Draft Report, and it has been left till the very last minute to make it public knowledge!!
The best way to fight it is for as many people as possible to go to the meeting at Basingstoke to speak and say “NO” to the increase in houses, and to demand that we are allowed a right to have a say on the future planning in “OUR” community. You are only allowed 2 minutes, but lt would take only 20 people to make them listen for an hour!! To do this you need to ring 845518 or 845682, ask for Committee Services, and say that you want to speak on Item 13 at the Cabinet Meeting on 28th February.
There is also a petition that can be signed at both the Town Hall and Gill Nethercott Centre, which can be handed to the Cabinet on Thursday, but there need to be enough signatures to make it count.
PLEASE ACT NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE OUR TOWN COMPLETELY RUINED AND OUR GREENFIELDS DISAPPEAR, AS ONCE THIS PLAN GOES THROUGH IT WILL BE TOO LATE.
