Whitchurch Utd ‘A’ 3 – Sparten FC 2

Andover & District Football League Division One

Whitchurch Utd ‘A’ moved to the top of the Andover & District Football League with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Sparten FC in a match held at the Walworth Playing Fields, Andover.

WUFC took an early lead after Damo Hack headed in Andy Witcher’s deep cross, however Sparten were level before half time after a defensive lapse let them in.
The second ‘Church goal came just before the break, when veteran striker Ian Mancey drilled the ball home, and it remained 2-1 when the Referee blew for half time.

The ‘Church came under a lot more pressure in the second half, but a breakaway goal from Mancey made it 3-1, stroking home from inside the box.
Sparten had spells of sustained pressure after the goal, but fine work from Hack, Nick Dancer and goalkeeper Richard Smith kept them at bay.

With just 3 minutes to go captain Dave Mariner conceded a dubious penalty and to add insult to injury was sent off by the referee. The penalty was scored, but the ‘Church hung on to take the victory 3-2.

The next league match is on the 17th December against Ludgershall Sports Res. at the Aster Crescent ground in Ludgershall.
