Social MediaWith the lockdown, use of social media and in particular Facebook has increased so here’s a look at the main Whitchurch sites that seem the most active, plus a few others.

It is a certainty that with such a list, a great many are not included – this is just a small snapshot of what we found, so PLEASE don’t shoot the Messenger if any of your favourites are missed.

Here are some of the main pages with number of followers/members (at time of writing) and a brief description.
Note that some are ‘Pages‘ and some are ‘Groups‘ and the administration of each may vary, but that’s how social media works.

THE LIST

Whitchurch Hants Hampshire (c.3500)
WHITCHURCH COMMUNITY WEBSITE Community Website
The Town Community website (this site) is under the auspices of the charity the Whitchurch Association, and mainly covers local news and general community items submitted by residents and volunteers, as well as a town calendar.
Items are usually also posted on an associated Facebook page, itself heading towards its 10th Anniversary having been launched in September 2010…..
Which is…
WHITCHURCH COMMUNITY Facebook (c.3500) Community Page
Numbers of followers have gradually been increasing. Most of its published ‘articles’ reach 1500 – 2500 users although some are much higher, even reaching nearly 30,000 on one occasion earlier this year. It is managed and moderated wholly by volunteers and is often used by other commercial news media for sourcing content (sometimes without them asking!)

Whitchurch Nostalgia (c.2000) Private Group
WHITCHURCH NOSTALGIA Facebook
Formed in December 2015 the page states “Our community is here to remember, discover and celebrate our fantastic little town! History, social history, past and near present given the amount of change that is happening.” It has a wealth of historical chatter and sharing which often puts long lost friends together and regularly raises interesting historical facts. It has just reached 2,000 members many of which are in other parts of the world.

Whitchurch (Hants) Community Live Events (c.2000) Public Group
WHITCHURCH COMMUNITY LIVE EVENTS Facebook
A new kid on the block, this very new site was created as a result of COVID-19 in March 2020 and the cessation of the Whitchurch live entertainment scene along with the closure of local pubs through the lockdown.
The vision is “to create virtual live local events that (logistics permitting) we will publicise and produce which you can watch and engage with live and in real time via this page. Whitchurch TV if you like”. It has been amazingly successful with quizzes, cookery, yoga, music, visits to farms, and many other activities featured on its live programme of events.

Whitchurch Families (Hampshire) (c.1500) Private Group
WHITCHURCH FAMILIES Facebook
This site was set up nearly six years ago in August 2014 to enable local parents to share information.
The admin say: “This group was set up as a way for Whitchurch (Hants) parents to communicate with each other anything relevant to their children and their family and local life. From questions about potty training to recommendations about local businesses to swaps and exchanges of used items, organising play dates etc. etc.”

Whitchurch (Hants) Community Support (c.1000) Private Group
WHITCHURCH COMMUNITY SUPPORT (COVID-19) Facebook
A very new group set up in March 2020 response to the Covid-19 outbreak.
It says: “Please let us know if you, family members, friends or neighbours, need some assistance. We’re hoping that we can get some shopping, pick up prescriptions or run small errands during this challenging time.”
It has built up a terrific network of helpers providing support to the town’s residents. If you need help this is a place to visit.

Items For Sale in Whitchurch Hants area (c.2300) Private Group
ITEMS FOR SALE IN WHITCHURCH HANTS AREA Facebook
A local selling group for Whitchurch, set up in July 2011.
Note that due to COVID-19 great care needs to be taken when selling and buying goods.
