The heavens opening this morning for one of the wettest mornings of the year, which had people hurrying about with their brollies and wellingtons.

Flooding at Bell Street Car Park.

But with the rain came more than just getting a little wet, as some drains failed to cope and some roads in town became covered in water. Reports were also received of several country routes suffering flooding.

Bell Street Car Park also lost a dozen spaces as water failed to drain away.

With further development planned for the town there is growing concern that the town’s infrastructure will not be able to cope.

Think about pedestrians
Drivers also caused some problems to pedestrians as they drove through the accumulating puddles too fast, splashing those on pavements.

Police put out a message today saying:

It might seem like a harmless prank but driving through puddles to intentionally splash pedestrians is an offence under section 3 of the Road Traffic Act.
You could be charged with careless and inconsiderate driving and be fined up to £2,500.

Other incidents causing traffic difficulties
An accident on the A34 northbound just south of town earlier today was also causing tailbacks to the A303. Yesterday two crashes on the B3400 caused traffic problems between Whitchurch and Basingstoke.
This lunchtime there are also reports of Whitchurch – Basingstoke bus diversions due to a traffic incident meaning Worting Road could not be used, which is affecting students travelling to BCOT and QMC.

Looking on the bright side…
‘Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.’
