Whitchurch Town CouncilAt a full meeting of the Whitchurch Town Council last night (Monday), an election took place for the next Chairman and Mayor for the town.

At last month’s meeting, Cllr Linda Thomas had proposed that Cllr Jackie Day stand for a second term. This was followed by a call from Cllr Allan Vaughan to revise the method of selection so that all Councillors could make nominations through the Town Clerk before a secret vote was taken.

Three nominations
Last night the Clerk announced to the Council Chamber that three nominations had been received:
Cllr John Clark, Cllr Jackie Day, Cllr Peter Williams.

Cllr John Clark, as Mayor in 2010-2011, returns to office this May.

After the ballot it was announced that the Mayor for 2013-2014 would be Cllr John Clark.

There was one nomination for Deputy Mayor, which was confirmed as Cllr Mike Kean.

Councillor Clark is not new to the Mayoral role, having previously held the prestigious post in 1989-92 and 2010-11.
Presently he is chairman of the Town Council’s Development Committee and he spoke against the proposed increase in housing numbers at last week’s meeting in Basingstoke.

He officially takes over the chain of office in early May.
