Tescos have withdrawn their application for a 24-hour cash machine at the Winchester Street Tesco Express store, although they are expected to resubmit it in a different form.

The application, submitted last September, would provide the town with another ATM, at a time when there remains uncertainty over the HSBC one at the Town Hall. The renewal of the lease on that one arises later this year. The HSBC machine was only given a stay of execution after the strong Save the Bank Campaign, run by local residents and backed by the Town Council.

Although only a few people had commented on the Tesco application, the majority were in favour of approval.
However, it is also believed that the Council’s planners may have been opposed due to conservation area concerns. The expectation is that Tescos will now submit an application to house the ATM within an extension to the existing store rather than as an independent ATM ‘pod’.
