Investigations have been taking place about the possibility of Whitchurch having a Community Speedwatch scheme. Speeding is one of the factors than can affect the quality of life in an area.
Run by volunteers
Speed Watch is a scheme run by local accredited volunteers and is coordinated by Hampshire Constabulary. Members of the community receive training and are vetted before joining a scheme.
The volunteers use equipment that monitors the speed of traffic and record the details which are added to a database. Vehicle checks are undertaken by the police and letters sent to the registered keepers advising them of the speed and reminding them of why it is a community concern.
If a problem continues, enforcement against drivers may be undertaken by the Police.
Communities can work together
Local communities often work together as the equipment required can be costly.
Nearby, St Mary Bourne already runs a Speed Watch scheme.
Meanwhile Whitchurch still awaits the commencement of the 20mph pilot.
