Soil has been turned over, composts dug in, plots hoed, vegetables cultivated, seeds plants talked to and slugs fed with beer, but who has the greenest of fingers?

Competition to mark the Diamond Jubilee
Yesterday (Saturday) was a highlight in the season’s work when the winners of the very first Jubilee Allotments Competition were announced.
The Town Council had introduced the new annual competition as one of its initiatives to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

Judging panel
With the organisation ably overseen by Cllr Mike Kean, the chair of the judging panel was Mayor Cllr Jackie Day joined by Jody Schekter owner of Laverstoke Park, Geoff Knappett of Newbury Building Society, Graham Burgess local garden designer, and local resident and Town Councillor Claire Isbester.
The esteemed team have been out checking on the Winchester Road site, often with secret undercover visits, to determine just which plots were the best. The choice was a tough one as they judged the plots in three categories Cultivation and cropping, Husbandry, and Environment.

L to r: Mayor Cllr Jackie Day, Jody Scheckter, Sir George Young MP, Gary Hopgood (winner), Sue Hopgood, Mike Barrie (allotment holder) Geoff Knappett, Newbury Building Society and Cllr Mike Kean.

The winners
So, as they say, without further ado the winners for 2012 were:

Champion Allotment Holder:

Vic Jordan (plot 14a)

Best Newcomer to the site:

Gary Hopgood (plot 10b)

Prizes
First prize was a £100 hamper, donated by Jody Schekter, while the Newbury Building Society offered £50 of gardening vouchers to the Best Newcomer and they are thanked for their kind support. The overall Champion Allotment Holder also takes Mayor’s Diamond Jubilee Shield for one year, inscribed with their name. Unfortunately Vic Jordan was unable to be present but the award was accepted on his behalf by Sir George Young.
