The 49-space Pay and Display car park has been operating on the site of the demolished Railway Hotel on a temporary basis for six years, with an approval that requires renewal every three.
The owner’s intentions have been to develop the site for housing and a planning application was approved by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in July 2015 for three 3-bed and two 4-bed dwellings.
This week the owner has posted notices to say that the operation as a car park has become “unviable” and that it will close on the evening of Wednesday 7th June (Wednesday) and that “the site will be redeveloped”.
The full text (and reasoning) reads:
Temporary Station Car Park
Thank you for parking in this car park over the past six years.
Your custom has been appreciated.
Sadly, over the past six months the revenue has fallen due to the availability of free parking at the vacant offices across the road, and the car park has become unviable.
We have offered it to both Network Rail and South West Trains, neither of whom wish to buy it.
Therefore, we will be closing on the evening of 7th June and the site will be redeveloped.
The car park is used by both local people and also those travelling in from the surrounding areas.
