Dead by Dawn – a name in itself that starts to raise and emotions as well as eyebrows, but what an evening this turned out to be; ‘dead’ it was not. Professional, well-run and full of quality, this charity gig in aid of Marie Cure Cancer Care was a credit to the organisers.
The music was superb from the powerful voice by Ryan Messer to the haunting melodies of Hannah and the Anonymous; from the pop-punk sounds of We Deny to the tighter but energetic punk-rock music of The Have it Your Ways. The evening rocked, but without losing sight for its real purpose – the remembrance and celebration of friends.
Highlight was undoubtedly MCD, Ben van Rensberg, a local rap artist who, with friends, had put this evening together. The pure emotion in his eclectic mix of rhythmic lyrics and beat music came through to the hearts of the audience, and a few tears were wiped. “When You Come Home”, in which he was partnered by Hannah was particularly moving and his renditions with ‘guest’ Craig Davison brought rapturous applause.
But there was more poignant applause too, when Ben led a minute’s clapping in celebration of three local friends who had lost their lives at early ages, and also for all those others who have passed away and are remembered with affection.
It was not all music though, as there was a very well-supported Halloween Fancy Dress Competion, with most who attended entering into the ‘spirit’ with some wonderful costumes. Even the bands and musicians joined in. KneeDeep Clothing were also on hand with T-shirts and other products, while the White Hart Hotel provided a licenced bar.
Those who attended received a treat beyond expectation. This was quality entertainment at its best, showing a local creative talent that all too often remains hidden in the shadows; and with a good cause added in for good measure.
If this event is held again – don’t miss it.
