Whitchurch CofE Primary School has been awarded the Ofsted rating of ‘Good’ with a number of Outstanding features following an inspection three weeks ago. Across the criteria against which the school is assessed the scores were all either 2 (‘Good’) or 1 (‘Outstanding’).
The inspectors awarded ‘Outstanding’ including
• Capacity for sustained improvement
• The extent to which pupils feel safe
• The effectiveness of care, guidance and support
The verbal feedback from the Ofsted inspectors opened with the line “It is remarkable what the school has achieved since the last inspection.”
Very Close to ‘Outstanding’
Karen Baker, Chair of Governors said “The Governing Body and I completely agree and are extremely pleased that the Ofsted Inspectors recognised the successes of the school, its staff and children. The Inspector also stated ‘that the school is very close to outstanding’, which is a fantastic achievement. On behalf of the Governing Body, I would like to thank and congratulate everyone who has contributed towards making Whitchurch C of E Primary School the successful, caring school that it is and for providing our children with such a high standard of education”.
Other comments from Ofsted include:
• ‘The school has an outstanding capacity for even further improvement’
• ‘Care, guidance and support are an outstanding feature of the school’
• Recognition of ‘The outstanding effectiveness of leadership and management in embedding ambition and driving improvement’
Head Teacher Very Pleased
Head teacher Sarah Peters said “We are very pleased with the outcomes which reflect the many strengths of our school. It acknowledges the high attainment in English and Maths, which is a core purpose of the school and has been a focussed area for improvement. I am pleased that engagement of parents and carers was noted as a strength because we value this partnership highly and believe it is a foundation to the children’s success”.
Ms. Peters continues: “As you can see the report is overwhelmingly positive with two minor areas for improvement. In 2010 our science results were excellent and placed the school in the top 10% of the country. The work in children’s books did not reflect their current attainment and so we are now ensuring children throughout the school have more opportunities to engage in practical science. In a small number of lessons observed by OFSTED the children were not clear about the intended learning for that lesson, we will ensure that levelled outcomes are included in our plans and consistently shared with the children. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff who have devoted so much time to ensuring that their teaching is as good as it can be and strive to give the children interesting and exciting opportunities to learn both in and beyond the classroom. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented group of staff and they are very much appreciated”.
In the responses from a questionnaire given to parents by Ofsted, the following points are of note:
• 100% of parents agree or strongly agree that ‘the school is led and managed effectively’
• Every other category was answered either ‘Agree’ or ‘Strongly agree’ by an overwhelming majority of parents.
Following on from Testbourne secondary’s assessment of ‘Outstanding’ last year Whitchurch residents can be rightly proud of their two schools, the staff who run them and of course the pupils who work so hard to achieve.
