This season has seen many highlights for the Whitchurch Utd Football Club First Team, from the fantastic run in the FA Cup to their recent success when they lifted the Andover Open Cup earlier this week.Today was notable for another reason when they travelled across the waters for their penultimate game of the season against Cowes Sports on the Isle of Wight – hailstones!
The first unwelcome shock came just two minutes into the match when Cowes were awarded a penalty and the ball was duly slotted into the visitor’s net. United found it difficult to gain control of the game and went another goal down at 23 minutes.
After half time Whitchurch came out looking the stronger but still struggled to retain the ball as Cowes continually pushed for a third.
On the return to the pitch Whitchurch seemed rejuvenated but it was unfortunately too late. Andrew Charsley who had come on from the benches scored United’s late goal a few minutes before going into injury and stoppage time.
The Jam boys fought on into the last seconds gaining the ball and very often controlling the game but were unable to equalise by the final whistle.
