Over 1000 signatures have been collected on petition forms by the grass-roots campaign that hopes to convince the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) to include towns along the B3400, and Sutton Scotney (for Naomi House), in its final Olympic Torch Relay route.
Also today, LOCOG begun making conditional offers to the inspiring people chosen to carry the Olympic Flame next summer during the 70-day Olympic Torch Relay.
OVERTON KEEN SUPPORTER
Campaign signs and petition forms have been distributed throughout Whitchurch – and delivered to neighbouring towns by members of our Town Council, including by the mayor, Cllr Barry Jackman.
Cllr Peter Baker of Overton Parish Council is a keen supporter of the campaign, having been very busy over the past couple of weeks collecting in excess of 900 signatures around Overton. When added to the petition forms already returned to the Whitchurch Town Hall, that puts the tally over the 1000 signatures mark.
One of the campaigners, Andrew Reeves-Hall of Whitchurch said, “The response by the public has been overwhelmingly positive – bringing the Torch Relay route through our area is just the obvious and right thing for the organisers to do. It will be in Basingstoke and then Kings Worthy, Winchester on 11th July 2012 – thousands live in the towns along the B3400 and down through Sutton Scotney which are right along the way.”
Andrew continued, “Anyone can get involved in helping collect more signatures – the petition forms and posters are all downloadable from the campaign web site – Just make sure filled-in forms are returned to the Whitchurch Town Hall before Christmas.”
The Whitchurch Town Council supports the Torch Relay Campaign. The decision on the final Torch Relay route will be made by LOCOG in the first part of the New Year.
