The first torch in the Olympic Torch Relay will be lit in Greece.

The London 2012 Olympic organisers have announced the location of the official stops for the Olympic flame as it travels around the country for 70 days before arriving at the opening ceremonies of the Games in London next year. There will be a public celebration at each of the stops.

A few locations are near Whitchurch, and there is a chance the official route may come near town. The nearby celebrations will be at: Reading on 10th July, Salisbury on 11th July, and Southampton on 14th July.

The flame begins its journey in the UK, after being lit in Greece, on the 18th May 2012. Nominations are being sought by the Organisers for the 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers in this, the Olympic Torch Relay. Nominations close on

The organisers said, “The Olympic Flame will travel to within an hour of 95 per cent of people in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey during the 70-day Olympic Torch Relay.”
