The Whitchurch Methodist Church opened its 200th Anniversary Exhibition with a mass of historic interest collected together over the years.
Highlight was the launch of a local book on the Methodist movement in the town, researched and compiled by local author Alison Deveson.
The Whitchurch Methodists – the Story So Far charts the story of the Methodist church in the town since the present building was built in 1812. It includes contributions from many of the congregation and friends of the church and contains many historical photographs.
Alison was present, signing copies for eager purchasers, and told the website with a smile that “sales were going well”.
Combined with the book launch is a special exhibition of photographs and other memorabilia in the Large Hall and steady stream of visitors were finding pictures of their relatives and friends in the displays.
Exhibition panels show such subjects as social life, local weddings and the history of the church, while on display were books, certificates, communion cloths and even a special china tea service commissioned for afternoon cuppas. Today most seem to prefer mugs, and there is even a special Anniversary mug available as a souvenir!
A Book of Memories is also available at the exhibition for visitors to enter their own thoughts into.
Open during May
The Exhibition is now open throughout May on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10.00am to 12noon when the Church is open for its regular coffee mornings.
And of course you can also obtain a copy of the book.
…and a mug!
