Whitchurch will be buzzing with events this weekend, and we highlight just a few.
Crafty Affairs Gift Fayre
Saturday sees the first Crafty Affairs Fayre at the Gill Nethercott Centre. This is a special fund-raiser for NSPCC/Childline. As well as hand made items for sale there ware demonstrations, craft-making activities for both children and adults and even a caricature artist.
Doors are open from 10am ’til 4pm
Down at ‘t Mill
Next door the Silk Mill is holding another Volunteer Day – you can come along and help clean. decorate, do some gardening, or help out with many other small tasks, all necessary to keep this wonfderful attraction in good condition. These events, as well as being satisfying, are good fun too.
Back from Ben Nevis… and a BBQ too
The afternoon should see the return of young cyclist Chris Miller, fresh from his Youth Centre fund-raising ride to Ben Nevis and back – so far he has raised in excess of £5000. He is due at the White Hart, sometime from 2pm where there will be a BBQ and of course opportunities to boost the coffers even more.
The Big Match. Whitchurch Utd v Gloucester City
FA Cup fever of course continues, and Whitchurch United are hoping to make a giant-killing of Gloucester City AFC. This is the town’s biggest ever match and a good crowd is expected with at least one full coach of away fans due. Kick off at the Longmeadow Ground is at 3.00pm, with entry £6.00.
The Sports and Social Club will be open from noon.
You may already know this is on…
An unusual event takes place later at the Social Club, where there is an evening of Clairvoyance and Mediumship, starting at 7.30pm. We believe tickets may be very limited so call in advance – 07769 277329.
Go Grease Lightning – see Andy’s dance…
Meanwhile down at the White Hart there is a disco music and dancing night – ‘Go Grease Lightning!’
It will be worth going, if only to see the landlord’s dancing routine, which a ‘mole’ told us is the result of many hours of practice! So dig out that dancing garb and Go Go…
Fun starts at 8.30pm and there are prizes, promotions and a late bar.
Gentle Cycle Ride, picnic, and a talk on cycling routes
With a great weekend forecast for weather, Sunday will be a great day to go out for a gentle bike ride and picnic, and there is no need to get up early either. Just turn up at the Gill Nethercott Centre with bike for 11.30am.
A very easy gentle ride will be taking some of the quieter lanes as part of the Sustrans cycling charity’s Fresh Air Miles event. There will be a talk on cycling at Longparish where tea, coffee and cakes will be available. Bring a picnic too and enjoy an enjoyable day.
Probably back by around 3pm. Certificates too for the children.
Charity Quiz Night – or just try the beer
Back in town the evening sees a chance to raise funds for charity, flex those brain muscles and enjoy some of Arkell’s fine ales. The White Hart is hosting a Quiz Night and all are welcome. of course you may just like to turn up for the beer. This week Arkells won gold and silver for three of its beers at the Taste of the West awards.
The White Hart is also listed in the most recent edition of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.
