Learning about our past was to the fore in Whitchurch when both the Town Hall and the Methodist Church opened themselves as part of the National Heritage Open Days with a wealth of information available.
Town Councillors were available to provide help to all those visiting the Town Hall, one of the town’s most impressive buildings.
The Town Hall dates from the 18th century and visitors could view historic documents, marriage and census records, photographs and the impressive tapestry depicting the town. Also on display was the model of the town as it looked in 1839.
Meanwhile the Methodist Church, which is celebrating its 200th year in the town attracted a steady stream of people, after the Mayor Cllr Jackie Day opened the activities by the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon. As well as a display of the history of the church, short guided tours were conducted, and a children’s trail was popular.
Whitchurch has a long and impressive history and several remarked that it was good to see this participation in Heritage Days.
