Whitchurch Utd took on league favourites Brockenhurst today at the Griggs Lane ground, with the slimmest of outside chances in taking the League Championship, but a win or a draw would secure second place and promotion.
Anything less would mean a possible failure and a slip to third place.
But the cheers rang out.
Brockenhurst 0 – Whitchurch Utd 2
And the Jam Boys delivered in style, putting two goals against the home side to take a place in the Wessex Premier Division next season.
Sam Argent opened the Whitchurch account after 20 minutes to the cheers of the travelling supporters and against the odds Whitchurch put another against the home side to clinch the runners-up spot.
The season has been a fantastic one for the Whitchurch squad, as team manager Jim Macey steered them into the top echelons. Consecutive Team of the Month Awards for February and March, and now, after 13 wins on the trot, to finish by beating the league leaders and win promotion is is a dream come true. And for main sponsor Brian Jackman who actively follows the matches it showed the worth of supporting local sport.
Today the whole team did the town proud but while it was Brockenhurst who will be crowned League Champions, the Whitchurch win was one for celebration in the streets.
