After the great 2-0 win over Brockenhurst on Saturday, Whitchurch United now start hitting the Big Time as they have been drawn against Blue Square North League side Gloucester City AFC in the 2nd Qualifying Round.
Incredibly the Jam Boys have once again been drawn at home, so keep Saturday 1st October clear (kick off at 3pm). That’s four home Cup games in a row!
Giant of a game
Gloucester City could see this as a comfortable game for them but with Whitchurch on form this could be one of the giant-killings in this stage of the Cup. Historically the visitors, nicknamed the Tigers, have not enjoyed good Cup results when playing in this area and will not be taking this game lightly. They are a good semi-professional team of young players and ex-pros put together by their manager David Mehew, who has played for Leeds, Exeter and Walsall.
Its not just the match…
They are also likely to be bringing a strong support and their fans are already looking forward to the fixture. And its not just the game they are looking ahead too, as on one of their fans forums they have starting commenting on the great real ale down the social club!
Where will it end…
But with Whitchurch’s present Cup form, who knows where they will end in the competition.
Perhaps they will emulate Tottenham Hotspur who, 110 years ago as a non-League team in 1901, went the full distance and won the Final!
Come on ‘Church. The town is behind you.
Dreams can come true. You can lift that Cup aloft.
The official town website is looking for a volunteer sports reporter.
