It was another high-scoring game for the Whitchurch Jam Boys as they put eight goals past a struggling Stockbridge team, to take them into third position and just one point off the top of the Wessex Sydenhams League First Division.
Whitchurch Utd 8 – Stockbridge 0
Goals came from Sam Argent (4), Chris Smalley (2), Nick Jupp (1) and Luke Walker (1)
On a relatively mild evening, the home team dominated the game and were four goals up at half time. The visitors sometimes looked over-awed and a lack of confidence set in as Whitchurch scored again shortly after the break. Indeed it could so easily have been a double figure win with the Stockbridge goalkeeper making some important saves as Whitchurch were presented with several one-on-one opportunities.
The First Division League champion will almost certainly come from one of the four leading clubs, as Petersfield Town’s challenge has all but floundered.
The top positions are now:
1 – 58pts played 26 – Cowes Sports
2 – 58pts played 27 – Team Solent
3 – 57pts played 26 – Whitchurch Utd
4 – 54pts played 24 – Brockenhurst
5 – 49pts played 27 – Petersfield Town
Whitchurch Utd does not play this Saturday, while all their rivals do, so the results will be keenly watched. Their next league match is on Tuesday evening (16th April) when they play away at Tadley Calleva.
Kick off at Barlows Park is at 7.45pm.
