The parade of colourful lanterns from the Town Hall along Winchester Street arrived at the Gill Nethercott Centre to meet up with those marking the 2010 worldwide Earth Hour, a recognition of the environmental problems our planet is experiencing due to climate change.
The scene was set for a memorable evening as the countdown to 8.30pm began. On the count of zero our Carnival Queen Annabel Sankey switched off the lights, ably assisted by Sir George Young, MP, and Town Mayor Vince Bradbury with Borough Councillors Keith Watts and Eric Dunlop supporting.
Tables were set and a Quiz by candlelight followed, with a light supper. As the hour was up, no one wanted the lights back on and the evening was rounded off with music by Keith Bell and friends.
The laid back event, and its serious message presented in a fun way, was much appreciated by those present who left knowing that Whitchurch had joined the world in something special.
