Last night’s Community Groups meeting heard of the plethora of events and activities being held in the town as representatives met in the White Hart.
Keeping in Touch
‘Keeping in Touch’ was thought to be a good summary of what these friendly gatherings are about.
Representatives from various groups ranging from the Toy Library and WADS to the Tennis Club and the Methodist Hall all met to exchange news and share plans.
Below are just a few of the items that were discussed.
Uses for the local library…
Catherine Marsden visited from the Library Outreach Team and explained how greater use could be made of the local library, especially by groups and organisations. Many exciting ideas were discussed around this topic, leading to much food for thought, ranging from visits for both young and old, to a town website point.
IT Library Plans update…
The group heard of the ongoing plans for the Community IT Library and of the equipment that is to be obtained, ranging from a digital projector to screens and a camcorder. All will be available for local use.
Parish Hall update…
Details of the Parish Hall refurbishment were provided as well as some of the events they are holding. It is likely to be closed until the end of November with the 28th planned to be the grand opening. Meanwhile the date of the awaited AGM was announced as being “sometime in December”. The refurbishments will improve the hall considerably.
Ideas around the Christmas dates were focussed on the main events of the Light Switching On at the Town Hall and the Christmas Fayre at the GNC on Thursday December 1st, while ideas of lighting all the streets in an artistic way using different colours raised much interest and some jollity as the various lighting effects were described.
The same night sees WADS opening with their production of Sue Townsend’s Bazaar and Rummage at Testbourne which will round off the evening superbly. Christmas will then be truly underway!
Another exciting event around the same time is the Festival committee’s We’ll Meet Again Supper on 3rd December, and of course there is the Fireworks and Bonfire earlier at Halloween.
Sharing… and next year…
Groups shared their own dates including shopping trips, theatre events and art exhibitions, all of which will be placed on the town’s official website calendar over the next few days, including major markers for next year such as the 200th Anniversary of the Methodist Church, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and the Olympics.
2012 is going to be a Big Year!
The next meeting is likely to be in late November and details will be announced here.
