Whitchurch Sports and Social Club saw changes last week with the leaving of Roy Preston as the steward; Friday being his last day. Roy and his wife Mo, took on the role four years ago and helped make the Social Club a very friendly and hospitable venue. There was always a welcoming smile.
Under Roy’s stewardship top live music acts played at the Club, while discos, parties and charity events were arranged. Members also participated in local quiz and pool leagues and in regular poker competitions.
Many enjoyed the excellent food that Mo provided, both at the special events and for those that used the facilities such as the resident Bowls Club. The curries at the charity night for The Soldiers Charity will be remembered for a long time.
With Roy having previously been involved with Shepherd Neame brewery, his cellarmanship ensured the beers were very well kept, and the Club has been selected for the Good Beer Guide for the last two years. It had also been nominated as an entry in the Regional Club of the Year competition.
Roy and Mo are wished all the very best for the future and will be missed.
Enquiries to the Club are now being directed to the Secretary of the Football Club, Mr Phil Cooper.
