Another Cup game for Whitchurch United.
Whitchurch 2 Winchester City 6
After their terrific win over Brading Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday, unbeaten Whitchurch United took on Winchester City in the First Round of the Sydenhams (Wessex) League Cup at the Longmeadow ground last night.
Ahead within minutes
Within minutes of the kick off, Whitchurch went ahead from a penalty, after a foul on Gary Powell on the edge of the box. Just minutes later Powell scored a second at at 2-0 down the visitors seemed to be in for a shock defeat by the underdogs, unbeaten in all games this year.
But City’s character shone through and they bombarded the Whitchurch end with attack after attack. Excellent defending and some good goalkeeping kept them at bay, until five minutes before half-time, after a set piece free kick from the left, Winchester had the ball in the net.
An attacking second half
The second half started lively, with further attacking play from Winchester and after a goal mouth melee they soon gained the equaliser that spurred them to raise the game further.
Wave after wave of pressure on the home side’s goal continued and the Winchester team showed their class and the goals followed – another four.
The visitors were the better team on the night and deserved their win.
Coming games and news on the FA Cup
Meanwhile Whitchurch, although disappointed, now prepare for their away game at Stockbridge on Saturday and look ahead to continuing their run in the FA Cup on the 17th September, when they take on Brockenhurst at the Longmeadow ground.
