The judging to find the winners of the town’s first allotments competition is now underway.
The green-fingered initiative was set up earlier this year to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and it is now hoped it will become an annual event.
Since its launch lots of digging, planting, weeding, nurturing, and maybe even some gentle whispering to plants has taken place as allotment holders have worked hard to cultivate their plots and their crops.
There are two categories in the competition and Whitchurch Town Council will be announcing the winners on Saturday 18th August at 12.00pm.
The presentation of the awards will take place adjacent the allotment entrance in Weir Road at midday.
Jody Scheckter, owner of Laverstoke Park Farms and former F1 motor racing champion, will be presenting the first prize of a £100 hamper of produce from his farm. Geoff Knappett will present a £50 gardening voucher for the best newcomer on behalf of the Newbury Building Society.
Local MP Sir George Young will also be attending to hand out certificates and rosettes to the winners.
The categories are:
Champion ‘Best kept allotment’ holder 2012
The No 1 ‘Best newcomer’ award 2012
The Judges are:
Cllr Jackie Day, Mayor of Whitchurch Town Council
Geoff Knappet, Development Director, Newbury Building Society
Graham Burgess, International Garden Designer and Nurseryman
Cllr Claire Isbester, local resident and WADS actress
