Maintenance activities are to require the closure of the A34 over a number of nights which will affect access to and from Whitchurch.

The work by the Highways Authority includes repairs to the carriageway surface, renewal of road markings, litter picking, vegetation and drainage maintenance. They say that “Undertaking these activities together using full closures will provide cost efficiencies and keep overall disruption to a minimum.”

The work will be carried out overnight and require a road closure between the A303 (Bullington Cross) and the A343 (Wash Water) from 10pm to 6am on the following dates:

Northbound closure
Monday 29 April for four nights:
10.00pm – 6.00am
(Friday 3 May will also be closed if works are not completed on Thursday 2 May)

Southbound closure:
Tuesday 7 May for four nights 10.00pm – 6.00am
(Monday 13 May will also be closed if works are not completed on Friday 10 May)

NOTE: The north or southbound slip-roads along this stretch of the A34 (Bullington Cross, Tufton, Firgo Gap, Whitchurch, Litchfield, Beacon Hill, Tothill and Wash Water) will also be closed to prevent local traffic from entering the road closure.

Diversion Routes
During the closures a clearly signed diversion route will be in place along the A343 (between Wash Water and Andover) and A303. This diversion route is approximately 20 miles and will take roughly 35 minutes to drive, and will be in place due to its suitability for all types/sizes of vehicles.
Local traffic which would use the slip-roads detailed above to access the A34 will be directed to travel west to the A343 to join the main diversion route.

Possible changes, so check
Road users should be aware that the dates and timings of these works have been carefully programmed but may be altered or cancelled at short notice due to circumstances beyond the contractor’s control (i.e. poor weather conditions or emergency works).
Confirmed dates of the closures will be displayed in advance on black and yellow signs along the A34.
