Wednesday afternoons might not seem a particular auspicious time of the week, but for Whitchurch residents Jon Wilks and Jon Nice, last Wednesday was particularly noteworthy. The pair, musically known as The Grizzly Folk, released their first album on this day, which is now available to download via iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and also on Spotify.
Despite being their first ‘official’ offering, the pair have been playing and recording music together since 2008, whilst they were both living and working in southern Japan. This album contains songs from those years playing a host of venues: from the lively city ‘live houses’, to a sea-front island cafe, to a song recorded in the woods by the sea with only the crickets for an audience.
Now back in Whitchurch and loving Hampshire life, the Jons have been remastering music from those early years. One of the tracks from this album is the very seasonal Wassailing Song, a 400-year-old English folk tune that was guaranteed to get them dancing when they first started to play it in Japan and likely to get you into the festive season too.
If you’re after a seasonal antidote to Sir Cliff and Slade, why not head over to iTunes, Amazon, Google Play or Spotify and have a listen.
Could this be the first Whitchurch Christmas number one?
