For those who like to see the power and tradition of a steam-hauled locomotive a train is planned to pass through Whitchurch today.
Locomotive No.70000, Britannia, is due to haul an excursion from Canterbury to Salisbury via London.
Britannia is renowned for pulling the funeral train of King George VI from Norfolk to London in 1952. 70000 was withdrawn from service in 1966. It is incredible that this fantastic engine only saw 15 years of active service before retirement, although since then she has been on several preserved lines.
Anticipated timings along the Whitchurch line are:
Depart Andover 0842, so through Whitchurch around 7-8 minutes later.
Depart Basingstoke 2138, arriving Overton at 2150
There may be a halt to pick up water at Overton before continuing to Andover, so the timing through Whitchurch may take a little guesswork!
Timings are of course subject to alteration and this website can take no responsibility for those listed above.
