Today a steam-hauled train will be passing through Whitchurch in both directions as it hauls an excursion from Southend to Salisbury and back.

The loco is No.70000 Britannia which will be hauling ‘The Cathedral Express’.
This impressive engine was built for express services and was capable of reaching 100mph.

For many years Britannia’s cab roof was painted white to commemorate her pulling the funeral train of King George VI from Sandringham to London in 1952.

Steam hauled locos are also passing through this coming Sunday (September 4th) and Tuesday (Sept 6th)

    A good place to view this would be at the bridleway bridge next to the A34 on the track from Bloswood Lane towards Down Farm – you get a good long stretch of railway looking eastwards towards the station.
