A top class cycle race is being held a few miles north of Whitchurch, and its an easy cycle ride up the valley to watch it.
Local cycling club Andover Wheelers is promoting an Open Cycle Hill Climb on Conholt Hill near Vernham Dean on Sunday morning. It is a wonderful event to watch – and its a gentle ride up the Bourne Valley to the course.
First rider off at 10.01
Riders set off at one minute intervals from 10.00am onwards up the steep and long climb that will have the lungs gasping for air and all muscles straining. The winner is the fastest to the top.
The Programme of riders is here: HILL CLIMB START SHEET
Also included is a Southern Championship for veteran cyclists with a fantastic opportunity to meet one of the UK’s best ever racing cyclists who will be presenting the prizes.
Robert Miller was the first ever British rider to win a coveted jersey in the Tour de France when taking the overall King of the Mountains jersey in 1984.
Eleven Tours were ridden and eight finished making Robert Millar one of the greatest British cyclists of all time.
Robert Millar is now Philippa York and is an established journalist. The race is honoured to have Philippa present to make the awards.
Why not ride out to Conholt and cheer the riders on.
A pop up café will be provided in Vernham Dean village hall.
