Phillippa

Skylark Rise is on the cabinet picked for FTTP and will get 100mbit (soon to be 330mbit) in the coming months. People on the 4 other cabinets in town that had FTTC upgrade are now live for upto 76mbit.

The BT checker is only showing FTTC data and not FTTP at this time and that is why you get no BT Infinity result at this time.

The 17mb BT told you is nothing to do with Infinifty, it is ADSL2 upto 24mbit that will happen August to November this year when Whitchurch exchange is 21c enabled (knowing BT this will be late).

2 or 3 more FTTC cabinets are to be installed soon outside the town to give high speed broadband to outskirts of Whitchurch.

You can order FTTC from most ISP's not just BT... BT Infinity is just the name BT use for FTTC.

I am on the phone to BT now, we live in Skylark Rise and haven't a hope in getting anywhere near infinity speeds for ages. If we are lucky then we will get up to 17 mb at the end of November! So, it seems to be a lot of hype with no substance! A more accurate message on the Town website would be helpful to avoid more people wasting their time in trying to check this out.

Ed. note: As we reported in the article, some of the cabinets are working and many around town are now able to place orders for the faster broadband. As we previously reported, BT told us that the roll-out to everyone would be delivered in phases: Faster Broadband Approaching Slowly. We have not been told by BT of any dates being November although some work at the Whitchurch telephone exchange this week has prevented at least one person from signing up for the BT Infinity package.

I have spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe and more interestingly flying across all of Europe. Wind Farms are everywhere. They are truly majestic and do not destroy views or damage landscapes. In a very strange way their sheer size and elegance adds to the scene.

Knowing we are producing energy without the need to dig giant mines in the ground then burning the coal and polluting the air, or even worse creating stock piles of nuclear waste, not to mention potential nuclear disasters that decimate entire cities and pollute tens of thousands of square miles, I vote wind power, solar power or wave power every time.

There is a strange sense of irony about it green energy as it is far from a new idea, we live in a Town that was built on Mills powered by water, so why not harness this again and pay testament to the Towns history? Mills for years where run on wind and water and finally after several decades the penny has dropped that in this case, the old ways where in fact better, and certainly a lot cleaner!

Sadly the planning dept in Basingstoke work from a book of rules and are incapable of applying common sense and reality to any situation. We have an opportunity to improve the Town and some non-relevant bureaucrat has failed to use their brain. Last time I saw an event in Testbourne there where circa 100+ cars happily parked on the site, certainly more than the 8 to 10 that they have claimed. B&D Council need to look at the big picture and think outside the box!!

I won't be able to attend tonight, but I do have a suggestion - some outdoor fitness equipment placed in the parks/open spaces around town.
These come in all styles, so some wooden ones for the meadow would blend in better than the metal type, but the metal type would look fine next to the skate park for example. There are plenty of suppliers of this type of equipment, but we have recently been in Southsea and they have a very impressive set that was supplied by a company called - Denfit and the equipment was called Fitpoint.

Fresh-air fitness is another company that supply this sort of equipment as well as a company called Wickstead. I'm not affiliated to any of these companies, just purely putting their names so people can go off and "google" them in case they do not understand what is meant by "outdoor fitness equipment"

These would be great if they were spread around the town as people could then jog or cycle between them as part of an overall work out.

Yet again B&DBC get the knives out for Whitchurch. Is it a Tory policy to knobble *every* local initiative? This £9,870 public transport demand and rejecting based on claims people will park in the bus bay is stupid - the gym is only open well outside school hours, 6.45-8.15am & 5.00-9.30pm Mon-Fri. So use the bus bay! Look at who will use this gym - locals, or people around the area. Locals won't use public transport to get there (cycling/walking - it's a GYM) and people in SMB / Longparish etc will have a very, very long wait for any public transport at those times of day - if any links will even exist. To think our council taxes pay the wages of the B&DBC employee who made this recommendation. It can only be seen for what it is - a deliberate two fingers up to our town and school.

The sooner we get self dependent with power and food the better. Our high standard of living compared with most places in the world will mean that a key part of any production process , labour, will be cheaper elsewhere so our products will not sell.

That condition with regards to power and heating will be aggravated if the Gulf Stream re-orientates.

A local pullover factory could do well.

Key in all of this and so many other things is for officers of the council , paid by the populace, is to ascertain the "sort of thing" the community wants and then to apply the skills and cleverness which hopefully led to them being appointed on our behalf as public servants to see how those objectives can best achieved.

It might inlcude a bit of strategic planing to ensure that things like parking serve those needs and wider needs. in our community.

The Sports and Social Club has lots of parking and should there be any housing development in the school area provision for other social needs like greenspace and parking should be considered. Such parking should include charging points for electric mobility scooters and bicycles and cars.

There will be another windfarm at Woodmancott. I would imagine it would be more economic to route the power to there and on to the substation at Preston Candover.

I doubt that any pylons would cross the town - too expensive and too much hassle from the local community.

It is too early to give an informed opinion on the wind farm because there is no firm application. This consultation is about the scope of the Environmental Impact Assessment, what should be included. Any discussion of the merits or otherwise will not be considered until the full planning application has been submitted.
__________

Eds note:
The belief obtained from the Town Council Development meeting was that Whitchurch Town Councillors wish to encourage discussion in order to obtain a greater understanding of the issues involved. Comments can be added below.
