Sir Alfred Herbert lived at Dunley Manor from 1917 until his death in 1957 and his widow Nina lived thereafter at Wadwick House, St Mary Bourne until 1967.

Sir Alfred is little known these days but he built up the largest machine tools business in the world and was a great benefactor to the City of Coventry where his works were based, bequeathing it its now highly successful Herbert Gallery and Museum.

Sir Alfred was a noted shot and an even keener fisherman and particularly loved fishing the Test at Whitchurch (Fulling Mill) and the Itchen.
